    Tuktirey doesn't miss her home in the forest the same way her siblings do, but she does miss some of the memories. Like how the forest would sound in the morning, how the bioluminescence would cover everything at night, how dark it got at midnight high up in the new hometree, the tentpole with their heights marked on them.

    She can't bring the sound of the forest to Awa'atlu- but she can remake the tentpole.

    Tsireya settles a hand over her hair, messy with sleep, laughter and love ringing in her gentle voice, “Lo’ak, I must go.”

    “No, you must stay” Lo’ak denies, elongating the words no and stay until they sound almost like a child’s whine, as though she can convince her dutiful wife to stay if she just asks long enough.
