The lock surrendered with a soft click and you pushed the door open slowly. Light from the hallway briefly spilled onto the floor as you slunk in and shut the door behind you. It took a moment for your eyes to adjust to the space that lay in total darkness aside from a sliver of streetlight coming in from behind the curtains.
What were you looking for? Whatever you could find. You were sly, a fox, a thief. You loved the rush of being somewhere that you weren’t supposed to be. And you had never been caught so perhaps that had gone to your head. Besides, you liked to think that you only took what people wouldn’t miss. Small things, inconsequential trophies, just something to remember that you had once been there.
No sooner had you taken a few tentative tiptoed steps inside, you heard a low voice. “There s’mthn I can help you with?”

Blame it on the abysmal lighting of the club, but you swore that you saw the edge of Joel’s mouth twitch up in the ghost of a smile, if only for the slightest of seconds. You made it a point to never focus on anyone specific in the crowd, but his presence was notable. It was almost as if he commanded respect, and he had definitely caught your attention.
Probably because you weren’t used to seeing men like that in here where most interactions were cheap and frivolous. But that’s just business, you told yourself.
