Summary
The sword weighed like an anchor in her hand, the tip of the blade dragging against the ground. It looked and felt nothing like the training ones she’d used in Rosaria, or the ones that the Shields carried around the castle.
Her chest ached at the memory, like a set of talons around her heart. Those memories were full of warmth and light, but revisiting them felt like torture. Each memory was wrapped around her insides like spider silk, and each one that surfaced felt like a fresh wound.
There was no warmth or light here. There was only gloom, flame, and frost.

"My work is here, in Ninjago City. I have books to read, connections to make, training to do. What the hell am I going to do in Shintaro?"
Maybe, in another life, she would’ve dreamed about visiting the legendary kingdom. She would’ve raved to her parents about flying people and gold spires and ivory buildings, or drawn pictures of it in her sketchbook, or read about it in fairy tales. There was something about already being a princess that just sucked the magic right out of it.
The Royal Family is invited to Shintaro. Vania is thrilled to have a new friend. Harumi is less so.

When the gate creaked and clattered open, the entourage of mounted chocobos paraded past the capital’s vast walls. A mountain of cheers erupted from behind him, but his attention went straight to his father. Paler, thinner, but alive and triumphant all the same, perched upon his silvery mount.
It was another, softer silver that next drew his eye.
His first thought was that she was utterly, enchantingly beautiful.
