Deafening beeping was the first thing Jouno heard when he started to wake up. It vibrated painfully in his skull. He felt like his brain was being shaken violently by an earthquake, that his skull was closing in on itself. Other noises also echoed in his ears. He could hear a clock ticking loudly nearby, the footsteps of tens of people from varying distances, and, most surprisingly, his and someone else’s heartbeat.
Jouno didn’t know what was happening. Why couldn’t he remember where he was?
His eyes fluttered and he turned his head to the side. The pillowcase rustled under his cheek and he felt each individual fiber scrape against his skin. It was so itchy and painful. Slowly, he opened his eyes. They hurt. Everything hurt. It was all so painful and strange and–
Nothing.
There was absolutely nothing.
