Summary
After a Grimm attack forces the umpteenth upheaval and relocation of their clan in as many months, Starr Sanzang sees the writing on the wall and decides that maybe it's time for a change—for both herself and her baby cousin, Sun Wukong.
With her sights set on the capital, the City of Vacuo, Starr leaves her cousin in the care of their uncle, Sandeep Rhassoul, in hopes that once she reaches the city safely and has the means to support them both, Sun can make the journey himself—accompanied by their Uncle and the seasonal merchant convoy that travels to and from the smaller settlements to the capital.
However, when Sun stows away in the back of the same passing merchant's truck as she, Starr finds that her plans have fallen by the wayside.
Now with a rambunctious 12-year-old Sun in tow, they must travel across the dangerous, desolate Vacuan Wastes and make it to the capital before the seasons change and the overbearing Summer heat makes it almost impossible to travel by day, or before the Grimm get to them first.
