Summary
Belly jumped into his arms and Conrad hugged her back as tightly as he always did when he hadn’t seen her for a while, leaning down and lifting her off her feet. Belly squealed into his shoulders.
It was always like this when they saw each other again. They melted into each other.
Years of friendship, and Belly learned to embrace her relationship with Conrad for what it was. And it was beautiful. It was right.
It was everything. It was enough. It had to be.
Conrad rarely said things he didn’t mean. When he did, he owned up to it. The anger he felt towards his mother’s death, the resentment he held for his father, the impossible standards he tried to live by… it all had faded away over the years. Became a quiet hum he could control.
Which was why Belly had no reason but to believe what he said that night years ago was true—that he didn’t want to fall in love, didn’t believe in it, wasn’t yearning for it.

Undoubtedly she was, more than she ever anticipated she'd be. Seeing Conrad at graduation hadn't evoked this reaction - her hands shaking slightly and a bead of sweat slowly dripping down her back.
This was different. Real. Because it was them at Cousins Beach. This was holy ground.

Summary
She didn't speak, almost didn't dare breathe. She was too afraid of him disappearing. He placed his face in the juncture of her neck and breathed. When she felt a slight tickle near her rib cage, she realized that he was playing with her hair the same way that he had done all those years ago.
"I don't know how to be without you," he whispered into her skin.
Belly's breath hitched. She could feel his arms tightening around her, pulling her in. He was a warm contrast against the cold air and his skin was soft as she lightly traced the hands pressed against her stomach.
"Say something," Conrad pleaded.
"We don't work," she whispered, shaking her head slowly. She couldn't turn around, couldn't look at his face. "We've tried, Conrad."
