Summary
Beatrice has existed for three centuries, long enough to believe nothing could disrupt her unchanging life. But one day, when an unusual landslide occurs near her castle, she makes an unexpected choice—to save one of the victims, in her own way.
Ava awakens from a deep sleep to find an unfamiliar object lodged in her heart, binding her to a fate she never sought. A human living in the world of vampires—the ancients call such a being the "Vampire's Bride." The vampires call her the "Ring Bearer."
As death closes in once more, Ava and Beatrice are thrust into a relentless struggle to survive.
Or to ensure the other does.

Summary
The orange and yellow leaves from the two gorgeous Red Oaks in the backyard fell to the ground in true autumn fashion. It was colder this year, a storm front had blown through just a few days before Halloween and threatened to upend all her decorations in the front yard.
Her decorations, of course, began and ended with some spiderwebs and a plastic K-mart skeleton, but Ava did what she could.

Summary
Beatrice stood a little taller, squaring her shoulders. “We skiff.”
“That’s hot.”
Though she didn’t laugh, Beatrice’s body relaxed, just a little. “It’s quite cold actually, especially in open waters.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know it wasn’t, I was just ignoring you.” She gave Ava a small smile. “What about you, Miss America? Unless you’re the bouncy patriot who accidentally stumbled into Olympic hopeful territory?”
Ava stood as tall as she could, not expecting to have to show off that particular night. “I am bouncy, and hopeful, but definitely not by accident.” She stuck her hand out, because she felt this draw to touch Beatrice again. “Ava Silva, defender for USA Women’s Soccer.”
She took Ava’s hand tightly, a single eyebrow raised. “You’re a defender?”

Summary
“Well, Ava,” Beatrice clicked her pen, “what do you have for us today?”
“Incredible story, actually,” she said and made her way to the lectern as if she had done it a million times. “I did have a great presentation ready—mind blowing, really—but I left my flash drive at my hotel, so I’m just going to wing it.”
“You’re going to…wing it?” It was the first time all day Lilith had spoken to a lecturer. “You are one of five, out of hundreds of applicants, to vie for this incredibly coveted position, and you’re going to wing it?”
“Yep!” She said with a happy clap and pressed the button to raise the projector screen. “I’m good at doing things on the fly. You could say I’m-“ she looked over her shoulder at the class, “in my element.”
