Summary
Alternate Universe-Phineas miraculously survives his stairwell fall, as the bone setting was successful. Yet, Gene and Finny ravel around tense feelings, Finny developing a great resentment toward Gene; however cannot always decipher whether the feelings of hatred are toward Gene or himself rather. As the senior year unravels with silence between the two,the boys are reassigned to separate dormitories. Gene, spending the year buried in his studies, furthering his ambitious academic stride, while Finny advances on rehabilitation and continuing his zeal for sports. Eventually leading up to the Devon graduation ceremony, where Gene receives the title of valedictorian, and Finny being granted high honor in his dedication to multiple sports. Ultimately, alluding to their life beyond in college, and how such values implemented so strongly by Devon and them, themselves paint onto their early adulthood and construction of self identity.
In relation to Marlowe's play "Dr. Faustus," which highlights the harm in limitless ambition and follows the character Faustus, who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for endless knowledge and a beyond-ordinary life. I wanted to highlight how such a paradigm flaws other aspects of life.

Summary
Rex—Rex was he. And I, below him, was ceaselessly held in that position, unmoving, only the embers inside of me left to burn until the end of him and his living form. When he glowed, I withdrew, buried beneath shadows. When he sang, I had to choke out responses concealing this strange feeling that swung violently between enmity and reverence. He was the sun, with all encompassing gravity that pulls and pulls. He was a victim of nothing, lover of everything.
