“What are you doing here?” A quiet voice startled her, and Kate nearly jumped, her eyes widening as her gaze came to rest on that of Anthony Bridgerton. A bearded Anthony Bridgerton. Older, yet less rigid.
The universe must have been torturing her, laughing at her, or, perhaps, both, because Kate never would have imagined her mind would have dreamed up a scenario where she was working as a governess to Anthony Bridgerton’s child.

Anthony doesn’t know what to make of this feeling. He desires her, yes, but along with the itch to bite, to drink, comes a strange sort of ache in his not-so-active heart. He can sense her interest, her care - she’d come all the way out to the country to ask him, personally, about his home, and now that she’s here, he doesn’t want her to leave.
He wonders if she feels the same.

Anthony had been adamant in wanting to share the news as soon as possible, while she had much preferred some time to settle in after arriving home from their honeymoon extension. Now that his opportunity to share their happy news had been dashed not once, but twice, his impatience and overt displays of affection were beginning to rub off on her as well.
Despite all this, they had still not decided when to tell the rest of the family.

He looked at her curiously, and she felt bare before him. She cried off and on throughout the afternoon, so she knew she looked far from her usually put together self. Her eyes red rimmed and swollen, cheeks puffy, her dress wrinkled. “Genny, what—”
“Answer the question.”
“No, you’ve not asked me for anything, but you can, and I will do whatever—”
“I want a baby,” she interrupted, knowing if she didn’t say it then, she might never.
He stared at her. “What?”
“I want a baby. I want to be a mother, I want my own flesh and blood, and I— Camelot needs an heir. It’s my job to give you your heir, and I want it.” She tugged at her sleeves.
He stood, looking much paler than before. He crossed the room to shut the door, the creak of the door hinge sending a shiver down her spine. “...what?” he asked again, his voice weak.
“Arthur.”
