“P’Tle, I think you’re in love with me—” Firstone blurted, the words tumbling out in the wrong order as his thoughts were tripping over each other as nerves took over.
“Yes.”
The answer came instantly firm and certain with no hesitation whatsoever.
“I mean—” Firstone rushed on as he is quite desperate to fix it, “I think I’m in love with you.” The correction slipped out before his brain could catch up and before he could stop himself from laying everything bare. “Wait…what?”

Five times Firstone laughed at his friends and co-workers telling him Tle is in love with him and one time he didn’t; or everyone around Tle and Firstone confirming they’re dating but Firstone had no idea.

“So I have a suggestion,” he teased, swirling the last of his drink in his glass, “should we skip all the heartbreak and just get married instead, Phi?”
It was meant to be playful. Careless. A joke thrown into the air so neither of them would have to sit too long with the weight of everything unsaid.
But the amusement on his face slowly faltered.
Tle had gone quiet.
Across the counter, Tle carefully lifted his hand. Between his fingers was the small round end of the muselet he’d been absentmindedly twisting earlier the thin wire from the champagne bottle, now bent deliberately into the shape of a ring.
Firstone blinked, his heartbeat stuttering.
Tle’s expression softened, not playful, not impulsive. Just steady. Certain.
“Tell me,” Tle said gently, his voice low and warm, “would you want to get married?” His lips curved into a tender smile, eyes searching Firstone’s face. Then, more clearly, more bravely, he asked, “Will you marry me?”

Tle and Firstone have been friends since they were kids. They once promised that if they were both still single at thirty, they would marry each other.
