Summary
As Mike climbs the Squawk tower in the Upside Down, he considers confessing to Will, but before the words take shape, Vecna possesses Mike, and he is sucked into visions of guilt and self-hatred. With Will's voice guiding Mike out of Vecna's twisted mind, the only way for him to escape is to accept himself and his love for Will.
“What matters is you’re still here,” Will continued, “And you still think we can be friends.”
Mike felt a tug in his gut, a confusing sort of melancholic pang that drew a sad smile to his face.
“Friends.”
Mike wanted to be so much more than friends. He wanted to be honest with Will about everything: how he found out Will had lied about El commissioning the painting; how he realized Will's description of El’s feelings had been no more than a veiled confession; how he and El had broken up as his feelings towards Will took form; and how he finally began to understand his feelings, even though they had always been there, unchanging.
OR: A Season 5 finale rewrite of the "Friends? No, best friends" scene where Mike gets Vecna'd AND is actually a well-written character (who just happens to have internalized homophobia and loves Will).
