i was fourteen when i had my first cardiac arrest. i was still somewhat awake at first, when the rhythm was still supraventricular tachycardia and they gave me adenosine that burned my chest. but then it changed to a pulseless ventricular tachycardia. my chest was shocked raw and i had four doses of epinephrine injected to my bloodstream before my heart started beating again.
at twenty one, even when i've long made peace with myself, the idea of an arrest scares me. i've had a few more after that first time, and each time feels worse than the last. while i don't mind dying, i still fear the... rather than the pain, it's the helplessness. they could douse me with propofol, but there are no drugs for helpnessness.
