    Young writers were free to get up on the small stage at the back of the building and read their work aloud to whatever audience had collected itself. All sorts of people showed up. Experienced writers, amateurs, professors, students, poets, novelists, songwriters, comedians, playwrights-- You never knew who would get up on stage.
