They squeeze your hand, just a little, like a cat kneading. You think they’re quivering, some. You squeeze their hand back. They breathe out, a little louder than they have been, and they squeeze your hand again.
They don’t seem able to talk to you, any more than you are to them. But their hand in yours feels like—like guard rails, or a safety net. Something to hold you back. Probably—it’s the same on their end too.

Summary
The clock is on the wall behind you, right where they’re probably looking, and you hug them tighter and wish for the thousandth millionth time that there was something you could do to fix all this.
There isn’t.
When the rest of their family is off on missions, Frisk and Chara are left to look after the temple, and each other.

Bookmarker's Notes
The dance that made Pyromorphite was a pas de deux, mostly, but it has some other style blended into it that you can’t decipher. Ballroom, maybe, or something else that’s grand and weighty and decadently tender. You can only see Chara’s side of it, but their arms are always stretched out into half of an embrace, or reaching out to hold a hand that isn’t there. It doesn’t even take a minute for the empty space next to them to start looking like a gaping wound.
Chara takes a breath and leaps high. Their body draws a parabola in the air, and their pulled-back shoulders and slack arms and head pointed downward and defenseless suggest a lift. You barely skid in to catch them before they hit the hardwood floor with their entire weight.

Summary
It's winter holiday season, which to two thirds of the Dreemurr household usually signifies suffering. Thankfully, this year Frisk has a brilliant plan.

Bookmarker's Notes
(They’re testing you, probably, you think. They do this sometimes, dredge up old horrors from the ten years they spent on the surface, and they do it with the relish of a kid flipping a rock over to show you something gross underneath it, waiting for you to squirm. Like they have to dare you to love them in all their ugliness, to prove to themself that you really do care.
It’s silly of them, but they’re only scared. You’ve learned to just switch over to comfort and reassurance as smooth as you can. They’ll figure out they don’t have to hurt themself like this eventually. Until then, you’ve just got to be patient and make sure to keep showing them that you love them.)
