Summary
Shelby and Toni have hated each other since their middle school soccer days when they faced each other in tournaments. The hatred has only grow as years have gone by, fueled by the constant buzz over which of them was truly the best midfielder. What happens when Shelby breaks the women's soccer world by announcing her transfer to UCLA her sophomore year of college, Toni's team.

"Has she ever actually said she was homophobic, Toni?" Martha questions hesitantly.
"No.. but you don't get it Marty she doesn't need to. She practically exudes 'I hate gay' energy. And have you seen her family? Her father is literally psychotic. I met him at a club tournament my junior year of high school. He looked at me once, clicked his teeth, and handed me a fucking conversion therapy camp pamphlet" Toni spits out bitterly, her fists clenching together at the memory. She doesn't mention to Martha that Shelby was right next to him when it happened. And she definitely doesn't mention how Shelby's face had gone all apologetic like she was actually sorry about her father. The whole thing still makes Toni's head spin with confusion. In fact, all her interactions with Shelby leave her confused and pissed off at the same time.
