    Summary

“I’m an angel,” the angel says, doing jazz hands a little pathetically. “It means I’m here to save you. Don’t you remember me? We met that day in the records room, but I understand if you don’t remember. You were a little distracted.”

“I was a little distracted being stabbed,” Al-Haitham says unbelievingly. “Also, angels aren’t real.”

In which Kaveh is an angel, Al-Haitham is a disgruntled working man, and this can't end any way but badly.

    Summary

“It doesn’t feel like your house is alive,” Kaveh says. “It’s only filled with dead things.”

Al-Haitham is silent for a long moment. “Dead things?”

“Like—” Kaveh makes a useless hand motion. “You know. Ghosts and remnants of the past and dead things. It makes it hard to breathe. You literally sleep in the grave of our project, Al-Haitham. Have you not noticed?”

“I’m used to the quiet,” says Al-Haitham, and for some reason, that makes Kaveh feel suddenly, unbearably lonely.

“I mean, do you ever stop and think about who your anonymous friend might be?" Tighnari says. "Or like, maybe it’s someone you already know or some random guy in one of your classes.”

“No,” Kaveh says, thinking. “With my luck, if I did know him already, then he would probably be the worst person I know. Someone like Al-Haitham.” The thought is so absurd that he stops and laughs. “But that would be fucking awful.”

In Kaveh's humble opinion, the title for The Worst Guy In The World is tied between four people: the asshole in his Tuesday eight am, the employee behind the library email account, the guy writing the university's advice column, and the student that the professor he assists always complains about.

It would only be too convenient if they were all the same person. (They are.)

“Well, it’s not as if I can just get a real partner out of nowhere,” Kaveh says in frustration, and then an idea comes to him, one that makes him pause right before he’s about to call Al-Haitham a mocking name, his mouth slightly open and positioned around the words.

He swivels to the side. “You know,” he says slowly. “I can’t get a real partner. But if I had somebody, anybody—that’d do the job.”

Al-Haitham has the audacity to snort. “And where would you find a person like that?”

Kaveh figures the best way to start off his love potion business is to enter a fake relationship. Al-Haitham is just along for the ride.

    Summary

Illuminated by the glow of gold-scorched parchment, the harsh lines of Xiao’s face smoothen into confusion, then resignation. He takes a steadying breath. “You aren’t leaving.”

“I’m bound to you until I find you love,” Venti corrects.

    “Yeah, so you aren’t leaving.”

“Wrong! I have a hot streak of success.” Venti claps his hands, the contract scrolling back up into non-existence. “Now that you understand, shall we start over? My name’s Venti, and I’m your assigned Cupid. Your wingman, if you will.”

    “... Xiao.”

Or: Xiao is, maybe, a little in love with his Cupid. Venti does not catch on.
