Jess grips her stack of notecards a little tighter. She can feel the sweat starting to bead up at the tips of her fingers, potentially beginning to smudge the ink of her written declaration. She should care, but before she knows it, the doors are closed and the elevator is beginning its ascent and Nick is turning towards her and reaching out and grabbing her shoulder, and then he whips her around to face him and her heart’s about to beat out of her chest and he’s looking at her like she’s the very center of his universe and she can feel his breath on her cheek and it’s just like old times, and then he opens his mouth to speak.
“You didn’t…you didn’t happen to hear what I said to that delivery guy downstairs, did ya?”
