“Keep her down,” Abby says, talking to the person restraining her. “Take her to the other room and secure her.”
“We should-”
“She lives,” Abby says, voice hard and final. “She didn’t have anything to do with what he did. She’s the reason we’re immune. Show some fucking gratitude.”
“Abby!” She tries again, even as she can barely catch her breath. “Abby, please! Please!”
The last sight she gets before there’s cloth over her eyes is Abby standing over Joel, still unmoving and silent, a pistol in her hand aimed right for his head.
Then a blindfold is over her eyes, and the only awareness she has is the sound of a gunshot.
The sound has barely faded before she replaces it with a scream.

“I’m not telling you to just let it lie,” Ellie retorts. “Just- why does it have to be you?”
Joel looks away, shifts on his feet. “Ellie,” he says, and the timbre of his voice rakes a claw down her spine. “You know why.”
She does, and that’s the thing- she’s not sure she’s worth it, this kind of love that goes blind with rage in the face of threats, the kind of love that drives people out of their homes and into the night and away from their families. The kind of love that demands sacrifice. It sits uneasily beneath her skin, like an electric current.
