Summary
Under the watchful eye of the Blockbuster cashier, Shauna's able to pinpoint the exact moment Melissa’s willpower crumbles, when she’s forced to break the silence and say something stupid and awkward like–
“Stalk much?”
More silence, and then Melissa fumbles again. “Get it? Because–”
“I get it,” Shauna snaps.

Summary
“She’s dead?”
It doesn’t seem real. It doesn’t really set in. The news isn’t world ending, Shauna’s whole understanding of reality doesn’t crumble with the revelation. Maybe that’s the kind of loss you can only experience once—maybe twice, and maybe Shauna Shipman has been drained of grief that affects her like that.
Still, her throat is really dry as she swallows again, and there’s a sudden ache in her chest. A hollowness, a hollowness that shares a resemblance with the empty, grief-stricken woman that is looking at Shauna like she might have anything to offer.
Shauna has nothing to offer. Nothing kind, nothing reassuring, and not even anything cold. There is nothing, and Melissa is dead, and Shauna feels nothing.

Summary
She’s taller than Jackie, for one. Just about Shauna’s height, but she seems taller; she doesn't have that tellatale slump Shauna’s taken on since the crash, the hunched shoulders of someone bent over their wood-and-meat desk, of someone weighed down.
“Down,” Shauna whispers in her ear, and Melissa slides down, shirt scraping against the tree. Later she will find a scrap of it caught there and tuck it away in her pocket for later.
