Fondly, he remembered their first time. Red, flushed with anger, yelling at him for killing someone again—someone who had deserved it, whose blood smelled so foul it turned his stomach and his teeth from the rabbiting pulse in a bared throat. He put a bullet in the guy’s head. For his troubles, he got the devil hunting him down and cornering him in his safehouse, his voice a soft thunder under a rising tide of hunger drowning out all thought except the one telling him how furious Red was, how he was glowing with it, how starved Frank was for it.
With a growl, he seized Red by the shoulders and sank his teeth in.

The fury of hearing a man die was replaced by an unease that slithered between his ribs and knotted his guts. There was something unnatural about Frank’s lopes as he tore down alleys, leaving loud, lingering puddles in his wake and a growing distance between them.
