Summary
When their shared mistake threatens to get them both cast out of House Lejov in disgrace, Cedar's best friend Arden steps in to take all the blame, and accepts indenture and exile to save them. To Cedar's surprise, Beckett Lejov - the ancient, mercurial leader they've idolised since childhood - takes personal interest in their training. For the first time in their life, Cedar finds themself under the guidance of someone who actually seems to care about who they become, even if his methods can be terrifying and unkind.
Even Beckett's kindness carries its own dangers. As Cedar learns the intricacies of faction politics, they discover that their mentor can be as merciless as he is gentle - sometimes in the same moment. While struggling with guilt over Arden's sacrifice, Cedar must unlearn a lifetime of lying to please authority figures and learn to trust that honesty won't destroy them. It's a difficult lesson when their teacher is someone who can appear as anyone, see through any deception, and whose approval means everything to them.

Summary
"What state are we in, Ash? Is everyone up, can you see?"
"More or less," says Ashton, still supine amidst the ruined remains of what used to be tall grass.
"Good. Good. We need to move. Can you tell them?"
Ashton moves slowly, favouring their left side, but without question or hesitation. Arm muscles straining, they force themself up off the ground, using the hammer to support their weight. "Hey, gather up!" they holler. "We're leaving!"
Then they look down at Orym and offer him a hand. "Where're we going, cap'n?"------
Orym is not the leader, or even *a* leader; his preferred place is in the background. But sometimes, doing the right thing in the field means stepping up to the role. Eshteross offers a compromise that will allow Orym to set the stress of leadership aside when he needs it.

Summary
When they were kids - when Milo was a kid, and Ashton not so much any more - Ashton had delighted in lifting Milo bodily off the ground and depositing them on high places. Up a tree was a favourite, or on top of a stack of crates, or the busted-up, shallowly slanted roof of Greymoore gatehouse. Milo laughed and wriggled, trying to wrestle their way free, or at least land a good kick, and when that didn't work they'd complain: "Ashtonnnn! Come onnn!" In response Ashton would put a hand to their ear, as though trying to hear somebody yelling for them in the distance: "What's that? Did somebody say my name?"
---------
When Ashton accepted the years of indenture to Hexum, it wasn’t just on behalf of the Nobodies, who had left, but also Milo, who had stuck around and whose involvement remained, as far as we know, a secret from her. This fic explores how the deal came about.

"He can't tell if Laudna is being cruel on purpose, if she's in so much pain that hurting him is bringing her some relief. If the ghost in her mind is squeezing a vice on something so tender that all she can do is squeeze and squeeze in turn, until Ashton is also screaming.
And it's fine. He can do this for her. He is hardy."

Summary
"He doesn't know yet how he's fucked up this time, is the thing. The bet is won, sure. The Hells took some juicy papers from that dick's office; she'll be pleased with that. But somehow or other, before the heist, or during, or after, - maybe even before Ashton left her house with the Hells the day she gave them the job - somehow or other, Ashton has already fucked up against one of her hundreds of rules. And when you fuck up, it costs you."
Ashton looked quite dubious when Orym congratulated them on winning the heist. This story is a specilation about why that was.
AKA “Why does Milo make that face every time they talk about Jiana Hexum?”

Summary
Besides, a small part of his mind that is always bright and sharp and scented like wildflowers whispers, don’t you want to see how much it’s going to take?
He can still see the red marks in the back of Zerxus’s hands where his own nails had dug anxious indentations in the face of Laerryn’s teasing.
Or
Loquatius had thoughts on foursome etiquette. Laerryn has a lot of energy to burn. Zerxus has a few significant personal realizations. Evandrin has all of these people in his living room.Bookmarked by squirrels_are_sleeping
