Lena has always felt this unshakeable sense that she is lost.
She was lost after her mother passed, sitting there on the beach and wondering how she would get home. Lena doesn’t like to think back on that day. She’s afraid that if she does she’ll learn something wicked about herself. She’s afraid that maybe she watched her mother drown and then went back to building sandcastles like nothing was of the matter.
She was lost after the Luthors adopted her, so small and living in a mansion larger than life, with maze-like passageways and rooms that opened to other rooms that opened to other rooms. Sometimes she was afraid that she would rot somewhere in there and it would take ages to find her, like how it had taken ages to find her mother.
She’s lost now, after her life has been uprooted for the fifth, maybe sixth time. She’s lost count.
It doesn’t matter anymore. When she takes the ferry to the island and lays her eyes upon the rickety house her mother left her, she will finally feel that she belongs.
