Camilla glared into the back of her adept’s head, a tense half-step behind him and the necromancer of the Ninth as they swept through the halls to Lady Septimus’ sickroom like two different birds finding themselves briefly on the same flight path.
She trusted the Warden’s judgment in many things. In most things. Camilla was smart, but her necromancer was infinitely smarter; if he was putting together pieces of this mystery she hadn’t arrived at yet, she would follow his lead, and back him up without question, to the last of her strength. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t stare daggers when he was making her job difficult.

There’s a new kind of quiet between them, after Gideon inveigles her into the oath. Muffled and close, like sitting in her bed at home with the curtains drawn all round, even as they traverse the twisted hallways of Canaan House. Like everything outside of them, outside the sphere of space encompassing their bodies walking abreast, exists in some other reality to the one where Gideon’s lips touched her glabella. Where Gideon’s robes brush hers now as they move. Where Gideon’s hand, still chilled from the water, finds Harrowhark’s just long enough to tug her off course.
“Our rooms are this way,” Harrow protests.
Gideon tugs again, lightly, before releasing her. “I’m hungry.”

Summary
They’re shoulder to shoulder, legs sprawled forward. Just hours earlier Vi had shrugged like she didn’t care if the Piltie tripped into a ditch, now they’re talking in whispers like they’ve got their own little secrets. Vi laughs- laughs- and he hears it even from all the way down here, because it’s a sound he hasn’t heard in years and it might just make him cry.
Hope. Dangerous. But so very warm. The blue gemstone buzzes in his pocket like a reminder.
If nothing else, Vi deserves the reprieve. If he’s gotta rely on a Topside enforcer to give it to her, then he’ll let his younger self’s jaw drop in disbelief, just a little.//
