“How could you,” he whispers, and his voice is more hoarse and clogged with emotion than he’d realized. He clears his throat and tries again, and he watches as the smile slips slowly from Lucy’s face as she takes in his disheveled state. “How could you lie to me, Lucy?” he asks, and sees the exact moment that what he’s talking about registers.
She sets the coffee and the flower down and takes a step toward him, her beautiful brown eyes wide and shining with emotion, but he holds a hand up.
If she gets close to him, if she touches him, he’s going to fall apart.
“Stop,” he says, and she shudders at the hurt in his voice.
The hurt she hasn’t heard in years.
“Tim,” she whispers, but he shakes his head as he lays his palms flat on the top of his desk. He pushes up until he’s standing, a good eight inches taller than her, and he’s never felt more like his father than he does as he towers over her and glares at her until she shrinks in on herself.
