Summary
That’s what gets him to snap like an untrained pup, the implication that his mother would’ve been the one to hold him back instead of pushing him to his potential, the way his father won’t even say in plain words what they are talking about, like it was some unfortunate event and not the greatest loss Artoirel has yet to endure. He’s so tired of hearing these platitudes from people who never wanted her around, like she didn’t work her whole life for him to get what she wanted. The sensible part of his mind watches the conversation in horror of how he’ll be seen after this, but the rest of him is too blinded by his anger in the moment to consider it.
“She wouldn't have wanted anyone to move on, least of all you. I can't imagine the weight it took off your shoulders to hear you wouldn't have to see her again.”
His father's face grows sterner after a flash of shock. “Don't say that. Of course she will be missed.”
“She will,” Artoirel seethes. “I'll be certain of that.”

Summary
Emmanellain was… well. Stephanivien had known Emmanellain since he was very young, and he had been prepared for what the experience of rooming with him would entail. In truth, he had been excited by the prospect of spending more time with the man. He wanted to know more about where he stood, about what he liked, about everything Stephanivien would need to know to (one day) (hopefully) (eventually) be a good brother-in-law.
It also helped Stephanivien keep his promise to watch over Emmanellain. Artoirel had been so anxious despite the indifferent face he put on for his brother. His partner made him promise two things before Stephanivien left: he would protect Emmanellain's life (at the least, since there was no way to save the man from his own embarrassment), and he would remember to call.

Summary
"If anyone deserves a holiday, it's Aymeric.”
“Here's a novel idea,” Stephanivien grinned. “You should both take a vacation. Maybe he can finally take that journey to Radz-at-Han.”
Artoirel was less amused. “The House of Lords would wreak havoc without us. I won't abandon my duty to the city in the name of visiting a beach.”

Summary
He was proud of the job he was doing at Dragonhead. That did not change the fact that he was dangerously devoid of gossip in the frozen plains of the Western Highlands.
Odette. It was a pretty name, but Emmanellain had no idea what Artoirel was implying. A new knight of the house? No, he would’ve used a soldier’s title and not one of status. And, upon second thought, it would be strange for her to share their last name.
…A daughter perhaps? He could not imagine a world where his eldest brother would have a child out of wedlock, and if he did, he would not announce it like this. Had their father revealed another child?

Summary
“Emmanellain knows,” he says, and Stephanivien stops in his tracks.
Artoirel can feel the uncertain energy permeating the air between them. It always feels so wrong. Stephanivien has never been unsure about anything, always leaning into success and failure with the same unabashed enthusiasm. The man only hesitates on matters related to Artoirel, and he knows it’s only for his sake. Stephanivien has never been secretive about his stance on their relationship. This only comes when he doesn’t know what exactly it is that Artoirel wants, which is frequent, considering Artoirel himself rarely knows.
The one thing Artoirel has ever been verbally firm on, when it came to them, was that no one was to find out. They were both in uncharted and unexpected territory.
or, artoirel has a realization

Summary
Sanson had long since told Guydelot that he was welcome to read the man’s journal, as long as he put it back in the right place. It was one of the few things Guydelot held seriously. No one else got to see the scrambled notes of that brilliant mind and the opportunity to leave little messages of his own. The pages had been filling up quicker since Guydelot encouraged him to jot down every thought he had, determined to still make a bard of him yet.
Sitting here, while Sanson lay unconscious and teetering on the brink of death, Guydelot could only stare at the book.
The exterior was coated in ash. The creak of the spine meant Sanson had to be writing out on the battlefield while he was trapped and alone. The thought of whatever could be in there made him sick.

Summary
“So you're the Exarch.”
G’raha nodded slowly, then at a faster pace when Krile ushered him on. “Yes.”
He tried not to flinch as the elezen looked him up and down. Then, with a shrug, Estinien took another bite. “I thought you'd be taller.”
G’raha had a century to ponder what Ishgard’s last hero would look like, extrapolating from stories and one picture he found of the statue. For better or worse, he doubts he would've come up with the man in front of him, eating noodles with his fingers.
“Th- Thank you?”

Summary
The skin around his eyes is raw and red. There's an emptiness to his features that sets sirens off in Artoirel's mind, suddenly reminded of the assassination attempt months ago, where Aymeric almost died inches from his own side. “Are you hurt?” Artoirel asks.
Aymeric puts on that fake politician smile with practiced ease. It is slightly less believable with an unidentifiable substance matting his hair. “Ah, nay. I must have fallen asleep.”
Artoirel levels him with a glare.

Summary
Beau crosses her arms and leans against the doorway. “So? What’s the charge?”
Caleb looks at her blankly. She relaxes at the knowledge that this face is the kind of blank meaning he is not amused, not the kind that shows he was traumatized by this experience. “Sedition.”
“C’mon man. It’s the first day of classes. Do you already have a snitch?”
Astrid rubs the bridge of her nose, leaning forward on the back of the chair. “You aren’t even going to pretend he might be innocent?”
“She knows me,” Caleb says. He and the archmage have a silent conversation with their eyes, and Astrid loses.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Archmage Beck rises in one swift motion, pulling on her robe. “Well, I was going to let him stew for a few more hours. But if you’re planning on taking him home I believe I have better things to do.”

Summary
“Oh, no offense Ms. Lionett, but I don't want anything from you.”
Beau’s hackles would rise if they could move from the interlocking restraints. “Are you going to tell us what you want then? Or are you just interested in keeping us here for small talk?”
Ludinus takes a long sip of his drink. “I want as much divinity as I can get, so I can tear everything down. I… had to do much research to get the Raven Queen’s champion. I knew the rest would need a little more… motivation, one could say.”
Beau can now see the unconscious body of the archdruid laid out on the demiplane’s carpet. Instead of being finished off, Liliana starts putting magic dampening devices on her.
“And,” Ludinus barrels on. “I would never turn down a chance to see an old friend. Especially one that has meddled in my greater machinations almost as much as the two of you. Especially one with some unique dunamantic ability.”
It all clicks. He's talking about Essek, he's talking about- fuck Yasha is Kord’s champion. Who knows if Cad or Jester count as champions in their right, who knows if technically Fjord is the chosen of Zehir?
“So we're bait,” Beau says, unamused.

Essek could not move too far in any direction without leaving the entrance to the demiplane unprotected. He could not go towards the threat or away from it, suspended in place by the uncontrollable force of him wanting to keep his friends safe.
“It’s been too long,” Essek said. Jester tilted her head at him and blinked until she could see again. It is still sometimes silly to think of her as a mother of three. “You should message them.”

Summary
“I-” Csorwe started. “And what would you have me do, sir?”
Without looking away from Tal, Sethennai motioned vaguely out of the temple. “It's a holiday, Csorwe. Take a break.”
Tal had the perfect viewpoint to see Csorwe deflate at that. He wondered if Sethennai knew how much being out of his presence felt like a punishment.
