It's different, being under the waves. She found herself distracted looking up through the dome with her feet rooted to the ground. There's something undefinable about watching forces of nature twist around you, beat against you, while being rooted in one place enjoying the sound. There's something about looking at a beast that has swallowed nations and telling it that it holds no power over you. Telling it that you will not blink first.

Summary
Artoirel closes his eyes. He refuses to let the frustration get the best of him. He didn't get this close to owning the finest dining establishment in the city by falling prey to any emotion that came his way. If he simply ignored it, maybe it would go away. He pushed it out of his mind for the rest of the evening as best he could.
The bright yellow food truck is still there when he goes home. It shows up again the next afternoon. And the next. And the one after that. It takes four days for Artoirel to break.

Summary
The letter was surprisingly personable, far more emotional than he remembered his friend to be in anything that may be seen by another. Half of it was reminiscences of days long past. The rest was a heartfelt plea.
Apparently, Artoirel had come down with a rare illness. It distressed him, which only exasperated his weak constitution, and he hoped a familiar presence would settle his mind the slightest bit. Emotions that Steph thought long gone came surging back. It had been no question that he would go, if it would bring any measure of relief.

Summary
There was supposedly a cure for love. The lover’s rot had apparently come with the dragons. Lady Shiva’s illness had been the most prominent record of it Artoirel could find. Several storybooks from his youth had graphic scenes of Shiva’s love for the enemy killing her slowly, pages upon pages of bloodied chrysanthemums with petals reminiscent of her lover’s feathers. Most of them were heavily moralistic, impressing upon her gruesome downfall for betraying her people, but he had always secretly seen it as romantic. To spend every breath so violently in love that it could not be escaped, to beg your love to consume you in the end - there was no greater devotion.

Of course he would. Artoirel has been his closest friend since they were able to speak. Artoirel's stance shifts to something far more aggressive, his growl adding to the frenzy of the other patrons. Hands grab at the older knight before him to no effect. That same man raises his blade with the serenity of pure conviction. Stephanivien weakly raises a hand to catch it, even as he closes his eyes, unable to watch. “In the name of the Fury-”

This- this wasn't a problem. The young heir to Count Durendaire had ‘died’ when Emmanellain was but a small child. There was no chance Emmanellain would recognize him by looks alone. Sure, if Emmanellain saw fit to tell his older brother or his new friend in the contingent Stephanivien de Haillenarte (another name Carvallain had intentionally been trying to forget), it would likely be a disaster. But that required Emmanellain to spend long enough around Carvallain, know who he is, and completely lack the decency to leave him to his devices. Surely that chain of events was so unlikely, near impossible if Carvallain played his cards right. It would be fine.
Sicard laughed with his whole chest. “Emm, I've got to take you to Kugane.”

There’s so much Varshahn has learned he should ask, why the man decided to leave without so much as a note, why he came here, how he’s enjoying his travels - not that he’s necessarily hurt by any of those actions, but curiosity has had a hold on his mind since he checked Estinien’s room to find him gone. There’s so much he should ask, but all he can feel is relief that his friend is alright.

Summary
Ivory scales line her skin over where her spine should be, as should be expected of an auri woman, but his fingertips brush just beyond either side of them. The sharp edges of the scales should drop off to soft skin, but his fingers find something that feels like dried plaster. The texture stretches less than an ilm, a barely visible highlight that runs between every place that Moku’s hard exterior and vulnerable flesh.
