Summary
‘Yes, I was quite right,’ he said. ‘Pretty.’
‘It’s too early for this,’ said Thaniel, flushed down to his collarbones.
‘Sorry,’ Keita said with no sincerity whatsoever, feeling a little young and silly. It was a feeling he was getting more and more often now. He increasingly felt both older and younger than he ever had. ‘Shall I keep my terms of endearment until after lunch, in future?’ They had never used anything resembling endearments, before. He could get a little drunk on them, he was now realising – especially if one simple compliment could have Thaniel looking like this.
Keita felt a twinge of guilt, then, for never having told him any of it before. But if there was anything a watchmaker knew how to do, it was to make up for lost time.(Keita Mori reflects on what he has lost, and what he has gained)

Summary
Just as Merrick leant more heavily against the door, thinking that he ought, really, to go, it was pulled sharply open, sending him stumbling. He caught himself on the doorframe, just.
When he looked up, his greeting died on his lips; because before him stood not Keita, but an unfamiliar young man.
An unfamiliar young man who looked decidedly dishevelled, with an inside-out jumper shoved on over his nightclothes. He held a small candleholder. The wind howled in through the doorway, and the flame guttered in the wax. The man squinted a little as if its insubstantial light hurt his eyes. He had obviously, very obviously, just been woken-up. Well, fuck, thought Merrick, drunkenly and pointlessly.
‘Can I help you?’ said the man, sounding both sceptical and unwilling.(a year or so after the events of Pepperharrow, Merrick comes to Filigree Street to visit Keita, and finds something he hadn't expected)

Summary
The oven beats out warmth. Mori undoes the top few buttons of his shirt, but still manages to look put together, with his cuffs neatly buttoned at the wrists, and the sharp lines of his waistcoat. Thaniel, on the other hand, has nothing over his rumpled cotton shirt but a large quantity of flour. He’s pretty sure there’s some on his face too.
But he keeps catching Mori looking at him when he’s supposed to be making his next move, so it doesn’t matter really.
Mori advances his knight recklessly. Then he sits back in his chair and stretches; Thaniel looks at the graceful lines of his collarbones and neck, and suddenly he would much rather be doing something else.
‘I don’t want to play chess anymore,’ he says.
(post-Pepperharrow; just Thaniel being incredibly love-struck)

Summary
How sweet, Thaniel thinks, to have this; Mori solid and sure beneath his hands; the slick heat of his mouth.
Mori is tracing his fingers carefully along Thaniel’s jawline, and Thaniel thinks he might be melting, when he feels a sharp tug on the hem of his waistcoat.
He jerks back to find Six standing by his chair.(post-pepperharrow, learning how to trust)

Summary
Thaniel smothers a smile – and then stops smothering it, because he’s done enough of that.
