“I want one day,” Shane interrupted Ilya’s inner meltdown with, really, the only acceptable response. “And then we can…” Shane trailed off. “Then we can, I don’t know. Reset.”

    “Reset,” Ilya repeated, unconvinced.

    “Yeah.”

It was another few moments of stunned silence before Ilya spoke again.

    “We could go somewhere.”

or, what if Shane decided to stay, that night… and then decided to miss his flight home the next day.

    Summary

But as they slowly make their way out of the ruined structure - four of them limping, coughing, and bruised - Ava stays behind for a moment.

    Just watching them.

Remembering the split-second she was standing in the open space - alone - after the building came down on them all.

It digs under her ribs like a hook.

I– I should have been able to phase them along with me.

The idea takes root in her brain. She turns it this way and that, and the longer she ruminates on the thought, the more it feels like an urgent need.

    Especially after today.

    -

    Or

Ava tries to grow her phasing powers.

    It does not go well.

It’s not real. It’s not real. It can’t be.

He’s hallucinating. A concussion. Hell, maybe this is some sort of purgatory.

“Fuck,” he rasps, the word torn from him as a cough shakes his body. Copper floods his tongue. He blinks, disoriented, and Bobby’s still there, solid, impossibly so, haloed in dust.

    “You’re not real,” Buck croaks.

“Maybe,” Bobby says with a small shrug, the ghost of a smile tugging at his lips. “Or maybe death sent me as a kindness.”

“You’re not real,” Buck insists again, the words cracking apart.

“I’m real enough,” Bobby murmurs. “Now breathe.”

Buck tries. It hurts, sharp, jagged, but the air finds its way into his lungs. He coughs, choking on dust and tears as the collapsing world bleeds back into sound. When he opens his eyes again, Bobby’s still there, steady, unshakable, holding the weight of Buck’s grief in his gaze. He nods downward.

“Put pressure on that before you bleed out, dumbass.”

    or

When Buck gets trapped during an earthquake, he’s forced to confront the one thing he’s been running from — grief.

    Summary

It had been hard at first. Eddie was so used to orbiting Buck like the sun, constantly pulled into his gravity and warmth, that the thought of being apart from him seemed impossible.

Then, his anger had brewed during Buck’s absence from the 118, growing until it rivalled that gravity, becoming a force in its own right.

Eddie was weak to Buck’s eyes though, always had been, so it became self-defence to avoid them at all costs. The easiest way to do this was avoiding Buck, and so began the cold front.

The thing with Eddie and avoidance was that once he started it was very hard for him to stop. He was a pro at compartmentalisation, a skill he had to perfect to survive the emotional battleground that was his childhood. A facet of that which he had never quite learned was how to unpack any of it after the fact.

He knew that was called repression; he knew it wasn’t healthy - hell, he even knew that he was long overdue a meeting with a therapist. But angry Eddie wasn’t logical Eddie, and without Buck to pull him out, he fell further into the well of rage and denial.

    -

When Buck suddenly starts appearing happier after the lawsuit, Eddie's jealousy threatens to undo him.
