Years ago, the two had spent many a night together, anonymous in the city with little but their pocket change, their suitcases and their dreams. Every cent of money Tom had earned in his young life as a small-town store clerk was in someone else’s bank account in those days, waiting like a caterpillar in a chrysalis to transform into greatness. It was still hard for him to believe he had ever been that naïve.
