There’s a part at the beginning of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, 3rd movement, just before the clarinet begins its solo, where the strings sing an achingly beautiful motif that hangs in the air like the soft mist on an early autumn morning.
The phantom melody clings to Lan Wangji’s soul like the mist does to his skin. It’s September, and the leaves have just begun to turn color in GuSu, and Lan Wangji feels his heart stutter to life.
