Her head is back on Dana's shoulder. Eyes closed, smiling. Fucking go, he tells himself. He's prowled long enough. He crushes the paper cup in his hand. And as if on cue, Emma's eyes open, meeting his.
It's a drawn-out note. Romantic vibrato, in the foggy lights. And for a brief moment she's smiling at him, but it's a leftover smile from her moment with Dana. The paper in his hand is warm, damp. Pushing between his fingers. And her smile shivers. Her eyes drop, lips pressing together like she's been caught. But he knows. It's him who's been caught in the headlights.

“Caroline,” he said before coming to embrace her, coat and hat still on. She sagged against his body and its burgeoning softness that came with age. “I am sorry I could not come sooner,” he murmured against her unpinned hair. “Today’s session in the Lords did not end until an hour ago.”
“What is the fracas this time?"
Gently, he took her chin between his forefinger and thumb and tilted it so she was looking up at him. His grey eyes were dark, penetrating. “You don’t want to talk about that now.”
“Don't I?" she returned, a little breathless. "Then what do I want?"

Instead, he pauses, and she instantly wonders if she said the wrong thing, because she can feel the way he has tensed on top of her. She’s about to ask, to say something (she’s unsure what) when he surges up, kisses her so hard that she’s left breathless.
