Summary
“Carlos, baby.” TK gently grabs Carlos’s jaw and tilts his head up so they’re making eye contact again. “It was an accident. Look at him, he’s fine.”
He cranes his head to see Jonah sitting at the table, swinging his legs happily and slipping potato chips between the bread of his peanut butter and jelly sandwich to make it crunchy, just the way his Tío Teo taught him a couple weeks ago. He takes a big bite and hums gleefully.
“It was just an accident,” TK repeats with a sympathetic smile.
“I’m supposed to protect him,” Carlos says weakly.
“And you did. I’m sure you held him and comforted him, you put that bandaid on his head. But, baby, he’s three years old. He’s lawless. You can’t protect him from every fall or trip. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t gotten a head injury on my watch yet.”
“Well you are the head injury master,” Carlos quips, animating his comment with a snarky little shrug.
“Ha ha.”

After making a wish in the aftermath of his mother’s death, TK wakes up in Manhattan, where he’s engaged to Alex and Gwyn is still alive. Although he remembers the life he had in Texas, no one else does. With everything turned upside down, he travels to Austin to find Carlos, because he knows that will make everything right, but when he gets there he finds that Carlos is in love with someone else.
TK is faced with a choice: stay in this new reality with the mother he adores, or return to his real life to be with Carlos and the people who know and love him. Or is there a way for him to have the best of both realities?
