Whereas time usually resolved any lingering feelings he may have had, time only made Rengoku’s problems worse.
His desire wouldn’t let go. It got to the point that he knew something had to be done.
“We will have to do it again!” he announced out loud to the open air. “That will resolve this issue, surely!”
If his body was so desperate to find fulfillment in the act, he would simply need to do it with Tanjiro again.
Or: Rengoku is plagued by the desire to continue his physical relationship with Tanjiro, but Tanjiro has thoughts lingering in his own mind, and for once, he isn’t being open about them.

Tanjirou's chest hurts. As if hands painfully constrict his lungs, then gradually release their grip. Finger by finger, letting go.
Kyoujurou is looking at him fondly. With a warm, confident demeanor that rekindles the sharp pain in his gut and anguish in his chest. The man's respectful disposition, coupled by an inexplicable fondness, had willed Kamado to attach himself to his senior's side so effortlessly. That same naturally resolute temperament that had lulled him into a false sense of security and assurance. Back then, the Hashira stood so tall that he'd seemed untouchable.
Tanjirou had grown attached too quickly.

He's not entirely sure how it's come to this, catching hanahaki, coughing up forget-me-nots, all because when he looks at Tanjiro he wants to see the sunrise. But, he's not entirely sure he deserves to watch the sunrise with Tanjiro. He's just him, and Tanjiro is so! So! So! He loves him! And for loving him, he'll probably die anyway, hacking up an insignificant little blue flower.
