Erwin and Levi’s relationship is picturesque, and the pair could not be happier. Erwin just wishes he would stop hearing noises in the basement, and he wonders why Levi keeps disappearing into the night.
“Years later, when Erwin wakes up covered in sweat, a terrified scream dying in his throat, he wonders if things would have been different had he called a cab. Had he not turned down Maria Street. Had he not stopped when the short man in a leather jacket asked him if he had a lighter. Part of him yearns to go back, to yell at his younger self to pull out his phone, to turn left, to say “No, leave me alone.” All of those “what ifs” and “I should haves” whisper to him, scratching at the base of his brain, some primal part of him alight with fear. He pukes, undignified and revolting, shaking and shivering like a child. “It’s just a dream,” he tells himself, a weak attempt at reassurance. It is a lie, of course. Erwin knows it is a living nightmare, one that does not stop when he opens his eyes. No, it is not a dream, Erwin thinks, wiping a hand across his mouth. This is hell.”
