    Summary

“You don’t smoke,” Gyro observed as he approached, a note of disapproval in his tone.

Nevertheless, he struck a match and held it out. Johnny, who had been patting at his coat and waist in a distracted search, bent toward the flame and took it. The match burned lower than necessary before either of them moved.

“They’re bad for you,” Gyro added.

Johnny placed the cigar between his middle and forefinger with a curious, delicate affectation, “That’s the point,” he said.

He drew on it with resolve. The smoke hit him hard—he doubled over in a sudden, graceless fit of coughing. Gyro sighed and struck him lightly between the shoulders.

Johnny steadied, breath evening out. “It’s just—being allowed to choose it.” His voice was softer now, drenching Gyro’s every nerve in the drawing power of his presence. “Even if it’s not good for you.”

He held Gyro there a moment longer, the acrid curl of smoke between them. “You should get to make a mistake you can feel. From time to time.”

Gyro had not moved his hand from Johnny’s shoulder. Johnny tipped the cigar toward him. After a brief hesitation, he took it.

“I suppose I can agree to that,” said Gyro.

    Summary

Johnny fixed Gyro with a steady, impassive expression, waiting for him to make a joke, or get flustered and continue of his own accord. For all Gyro’s advantages—his years, his strength, his knowledge and the many lessons he might impart—he was weird, and a little unsure; qualities which, in spite of all else, rendered him curiously susceptible to being teased.

“You’ve got bad circulation,” Gyro continued, somewhat hurriedly, “you get cold faster, warm up slower. And bare skin conducts heat way better than cloth—clothes slow it down, actually.”

“That’d suit you well, wouldn’t it?” asked Johnny archly.

“No, no,” Gyro said, earnestness verging on awkwardness, “It’s not—I run hot, even now, I’m kind of sweaty, and—”

    Johnny interrupted: “Spare me.”

Muttering something low and foreign, Gyro exhaled through his gold teeth.

Then, he said, “Come lie down. Keep your panties on.”

    Johnny yielded without further protest.

    Summary

The night was cool and hushed, with a scent of pines in the air: resinous, woody, and clean. Beneath the trees flourished a dense and glistening undergrowth—flat, rounded leaves with deep blue‑purple berries, almost black. When they made camp, it had proven impossible for Gyro to command himself to lie down, to retreat into silence, and relinquish, for that evening, his slow, absorbing study of Johnny’s character.

Some essential portion of that study demanded that Gyro provoke him; they needed a small fight. Nothing serious—no steel balls, no nail guns. Just a brief scuffle to dissolve the hours of dark. It was vitally important they do so, but it was not a condition of mind or heart that Gyro could have made any other living soul understand.

“Before—” he began while they were seated at the campfire, casting a glance—which he hoped was not unkind—toward Johnny’s legs. Johnny gave a slight nod. “You ever gotten into a fight?”

Johnny let out a short, incredulous snort, “Yeah.”

“I believe it—you make me want to knock the hell out of you sometimes.”

“What makes you think,” asked Johnny, dryly, leaning forward, “that I was the one getting knocked around?”

    Summary

There was nothing for it but to proceed. He just had to do it—to take Johnny’s face firmly, gently. One hand steadied his jaw, still damp with the whiskey that had rolled down his chin. The other washed the wound on his right cheek with water. It ran first red, then yellow, and at last pale and clear. Johnny remained tense beneath Gyro’s touch; the muscle of his jaw was drawn hard and unyielding.

“I have to sew it up in two layers, okay? Inside and outside. Three stitches each. Not so bad.”

    “Right.”

“Open up, wide as you can.”

    Summary

“What the hell?” Johnny asked quietly.

Gyro responded at full volume. “What?”

“This place is crazy,” said Johnny unintelligently, unable to say anything more.

“I knew you’d like it,” hummed Gyro. From every box—every small society—emanated a murmuring undercurrent of talk and rustling fabrics. The air was warm and humid. Gyro leaned back in his seat, legs spread, flushed and content, compelling Johnny to think of himself surrounded by his strong thighs.

“Didn’t say that.” Johnny slanted his body over to whisper in Gyro’s ear, drunkenly, “It’s gonna be boring.”

“All right,” Gyro whispered back, compliant, but smug. “Sure.”

    Summary

“A commission is being created to investigate the circumstances of President Valentine's assassination,” said Steven, unfrozen. “We are, regrettably, being forced to cooperate with the government. The Steel Ball Run has been—” he paused, searching for the correct word, his hand on his chin, “Criticized, to put things mildly.”

“What does that mean, exactly?” asked Johnny.

“The race. The presumed loss—it traumatized the nation. Those who did not understand Valentine’s true nature are panicking. He is being martyred, foreign governments are issuing proclamations, his disappearance is being considered a horrid crime. The United States government is trying their very hardest to implicate me in the conspiracy if only to have someone to point a finger at.”

Gyro had barely a breath for understanding to take root in his mind before Steven continued, a pained tightness in his voice: “They believe that I was involved, of course, but Mr. Joestar, the commission is attempting to compile evidence to prove that you assassinated the President of the United States.”
