“You know, sometimes, I feel like you’ve done this before,” Ondal says as he watches her study the mess of go-pieces and rocks on the map of their village.
“I don’t know about that," she grins, her small dimples enhanced by the candlelight. "This is the first time I remember making guerilla formations.”
“Not just that. Have you ever led a group of warriors against an overwhelming battle before?”
She picks up a rock from the place indicating their encampment and sets it in front of three go-pieces stacked on top of each other.
“You never know, maybe I was a general in a past life.”
Ondal laughs, “With how you fight, I doubt it.”
“Rude,” she replies. Her smile widening.
“I would really like to flatter you, but there is absolutely nothing nice to say about your combat skills, to be honest.”
The princess laughs, there is no way she can deny that and besides, she has him to fight for her.

“Papa,” he called softly. His father hummed in response.
“What is Mom like?” he asked.
The man paused mid-motion, turning to glance at his son with gentle eyes. “Your mother... she was the strongest woman I’ve ever met.”
Takashi, intrigued, sat up and grabbed the long white sleeves of his father’s robe. Now that he thought of it, he’d never seen his father without those sleeves. Wisteria flowers were embroidered along the cuffs, beautifully delicate. Whenever he saw a wisteria tree, it reminded him of his father—and he felt safe.
“Tell me more! What do you mean by strong? Could she see them too? Did she fight them off so they wouldn’t bother her?” Takashi’s eyes sparkled.
The man laughed in amusement. “In a sense, yes,” he replied. Takashi gasped in awe. “But I wasn’t just talking about that,” his father added, trailing off.
“How did you meet her? Where did you meet?” Takashi persisted.
His father scooped the boy up, twirled him through the air, and laughed as Takashi shrieked with joy. He kissed his son’s forehead and gently laid him back onto his purple woolen quilt, pulling the blankets up and tucking him in neatly.
“That… is a story for another day.”

Summary
Kakashi Hatake isn’t who he says he is.
Because the truth is that he’s actually a youkai in disguise, a wolf spirit named Madara who stumbled across the Hatake clan during the Warring States Period. Intrigued by the shinobi he saw, he’d proposed a temporary alliance in which he would offer the clan protection in exchange for their teachings.
Decades later, Madara is surprised to find himself inadvertently summoned to Konoha by the last living member of the Hatake clan. Sakumo Hatake, who is mourning the recent deaths of his wife and stillborn child, doesn’t want to be alone anymore. So with his permission, Madara takes the place of Sakumo’s deceased son in order to watch over the last Hatake.
(Fusion in which the youkai of Natsume’s Book of Friends all exist in the Naruto world. No knowledge of Natsume’s Book of Friends required).
