In this story, Shane and Ilya are not hockey players. Shane is an American scientist, while Ilya is a Soviet pianist. In 1948, during the Cold War, Shane reunites in the U.S. with Ilya, who is visiting as part of a Soviet artistic delegation. This is their first meeting since they separated in Berlin ten years prior. It is a story of two individuals in love, caught in the heated rivalry between their two nations. Neither of them free.
