    Summary

Something was wrong in the South: the followers of General Xuan Zhen and General Nan Yang were fighting.

At first blush, Mu Qing knew, this was nothing new. The two groups had enjoyed a spirited rivalry ever since their gods ascended. Like the generals themselves, their believers had always bickered and competed and occasionally come to blows. But, also like the generals, even when they didn’t get along, the two factions had historically been able to coexist without serious bloodshed. Lately, however, something had shifted. The usual scrapping between Xuan Zhen and Nan Yang followers had escalated into all-out war, and the two generals had so far been unable to stop it.

Mu Qing and Feng Xin get married to quell conflict between their believers. It's a purely political marriage between friends, so it will definitely solve their problem without causing any new problems.

    Right?

    Summary

As the heavenly capital was being rebuilt, a new temple to General Xuan Zhen rose in the Southwest. As usual, Mu Qing heard about it immediately and descended to make sure it was up to his exacting standards.

When he entered the new temple and found an exquisitely carved statue of himself holding hands with General Nan Yang, Mu Qing laughed until he cried, then burnt the temple to the ground.

As the heavenly capital was being rebuilt, a new temple to General Nan Yang rose in the Southeast. As usual, Feng Xin ignored it.

By the time he was settled in his new palace, Feng Xin knew something was wrong. After centuries of conflict and mistrust, he felt a sudden, inexplicable drive to be kind to Mu Qing.

    --
Feng Xin’s followers build temples worshipping him and Mu Qing as husband and wife. Feng Xin pays it no mind. But, as everyone knows, the way worshippers see their gods affects the gods themselves.

“You can’t fight without spiritual power,” Feng Xin insisted. “Just take some.”

With his hand around Mu Qing’s wrist, he sent him a burst of spiritual power.

“Hey! What the hell are you doing?” Mu Qing exclaimed. “I told you I don’t need that.”

To Feng Xin’s surprise, he felt Mu Qing’s hand clasping his, followed by the unsettling sensation of his own spiritual power flowing back into him through their joined hands. Summoning his full concentration, he clutched Mu Qing’s hand and tried to reverse the flow.

“You’re so aggravating,” Mu Qing spat, tightening his already crushing grip on Feng Xin’s hand. “I don’t need your lousy power. Take it back, Feng Xin!”

Feng Xin was fully shouting as he replied, “Screw you, make me!”

Always ready to give as good as he got, Mu Qing yelled back, “Maybe I will!”

Then, with no warning, Mu Qing pulled Feng Xin in and kissed him on the lips.

    Summary

“Captain,” Kabru cried, “will you pretend to date me? Just while Milsiril is here?”

“I don’t mind,” Mithrun said flatly. “But why me? I already told you she probably thinks I’m far too damaged for anyone to love.”

“That’s why it’s perfect, though. I get a little revenge on her for meddling in my love life by finding a completely unsuitable partner.” He caught a glimpse of Mithrun’s annoyed expression and hastened to add, “In her opinion! I think you’d be a fine partner if you wanted to, but I know you don’t. But hey, that’s a perk too, really. Since you can’t feel desire, it won’t get complicated."

    --
Milsiril decides it's time for Kabru to get married and offers to find him a spouse. Kabru decides to get her to back off by telling her he's dating Mithrun. Mithrun apparently doesn't care to object.

    Summary

Kabru didn’t see Mithrun very often.

Between Kabru's work as a royal advisor and Mithrun's post-retirement plan to help track and control the monsters in outlying areas of the kingdom, weeks at a time passed when they weren't even in the same place.

Kabru quickly realized, to his surprise and annoyance, that he missed Mithrun when he was gone. They hadn’t even spent that many days together in the dungeon, but somewhere between lulling Mithrun to sleep every night, fighting a demon together, and helping Mithrun begin to find a new purpose in life, Kabru had come to feel close to the other man. Mithrun, he was sure, didn’t feel the same way. How could he miss Kabru or care about seeing him if he had no desires? And yet, every time Mithrun was back in town, he came by to visit.

    Summary

More petals tumbled into the sink with each retching cough. The tiny purple lilac blossoms, he knew, symbolized first love. In addition to the lilacs, there were pink, red, and white camellias. They represented longing. White and yellow daisies. Childhood and innocence. Jaunty yellow daffodils. Unrequited affection.

Kaoru cast a disdainful look at the bloody flowers. “How trite,” he muttered.

Or: Cherry gets hanahaki and finds suffering for love to be a stupid pain in the neck.

“SLIME!” Miya shouted at Langa. “I’m challenging you to a beef.”

    Langa shrugged. “Okay.”

“Wait, man,” Reki chimed in. “Aren’t you going to ask the terms? I don’t like that look on Miya’s face.”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Langa said softly.

    It was not fine.

Next to Joe, Reki halted in the middle of a question about whether Carla could do calculus.

“What’s that ring Cherry’s wearing?” he asked.

Joe hesitated before answering. “It’s his wedding ring.”

“No way!” Reki grinned up at Joe. “I didn’t know you guys were married. Congratulations!”

“Whoa, what?” Joe stammered. “You’ve got the wrong idea, kiddo. I’m not married. Cherry isn’t married to me.”

Reki’s face fell. “Oh? Sorry, I just assumed because you guys are always together and you argue like an old married couple. Then who’s his husband, and why have we never met him?”

“His wife is a lawyer,” Joe said deliberately. “Her name is Akiko. She doesn’t skate.”

    Summary

It was an ordinary Thursday morning at Minette. Kinjou was sitting at his desk, proofreading a pitch for a new campaign and casting occasional glances at Chief Aoyama to see if he was looking lonelier than usual, when Manager Shirosaki and Momose came into the office.

Shirosaki uttered a low “Good morning” and gave Kinjou a stiff little wave. As he did so, something glinted on his ring finger. Kinjou immediately zeroed in on it: a plain, gold ring that had definitely not been there yesterday!

His curiosity piqued, Kinjo looked over at Momose. He, too, was wearing a ring. Simple and gold, it appeared to be a perfect match for Shirosaki’s. Kinjou’s eyes went wide.

Relaxing on the couch after dinner at his boss’s house, Momose tried and failed to cover a big yawn. Shirosaki watched him, then nodded.

“I guess we’d better head to bed soon,” he said.

Momose tried not to feel disappointed that the evening was ending and that it was time for him to head back to his own quiet little apartment across the way. “Sure thing, Manager,” he replied good-naturedly. “I’ll head out so you can sleep.”

    Shirosaki’s eyes went wide.

“Oh!” he murmured. “I forgot again. That you moved. I wasn’t trying to get you to leave. Let me make you a last cup of tea before you go, at least. To keep you warm on the walk.”

Kaoru shrugged and took a bite of chocolate caramel cake. His whole expression instantly went soft. Kojiro recognized that look, and he fully appreciated what it meant when Kaoru immediately cut off a much bigger bite of cake and popped it in his mouth.

    “That good, huh?”

Kaoru looked up at Kojiro with a sharp expression, clearly planning some cutting retort, but when he tried to speak, all that came out was, “Mmf.” Apparently, the huge bite of caramel had his mouth stuck shut. Kaoru’s eyes went wide, then his face morphed into an expression of impotent rage. He was glaring at Kojiro ferociously, but any intimidating effect was completely neutralized by the fact that his cheeks were so full he looked like a chipmunk in a pink wig. To top it off, he had a small smear of chocolate on one corner of his mouth. He looked so cute Kojiro could hardly stand it.

    “God, I love you, Kaoru.”

The declaration sounded loud in the almost-empty restaurant. Kojiro realized with a start that he was the one who’d made it.

“I can’t skip my ex’s wedding after he had the gall to invite me,” Kaoru lamented. “That’s the same as admitting defeat! But I can’t go by myself like a tragic old maid, either. Hey, gorilla, what are you grinning about?”

“I was just thinking,” Kojiro said with a chuckle, “if you’re too stubborn to skip the wedding and too surly to get a date, I could go with you.”

Kaoru gave him a withering look. “You’re suggesting I go to my ex’s wedding with my childhood best friend?”

Kojiro shrugged. “Sure, if you want. Or I could pretend to be your boyfriend. The better for you to win the breakup!”

Reki waited at the starting line at Crazy Rock as Langa skated up. The blue-haired man had changed a little in the ten years they’d known each other, but Reki thought he was every bit as beautiful as the day they’d met.

“Hey, sunshine!” Langa yelled, his tone sarcastic and his pretty face twisted into a smirk. “Ready for me to rain on your parade?”

Reki scoffed back at him, “Watch out, snowflake, I’m on fire tonight, so if you’re not careful you’ll melt.”

“You know who’s been really annoying lately?” Miya muttered.

Miya and Cherry Blossom stood in a crowd of spectators at Crazy Rock. On the monitors overhead, Reki and Shadow were preparing for a rematch. It looked like Reki was holding a last-minute strategy discussion with Langa. Langa was gazing into Reki’s eyes as if he was having a religious experience and nodding furiously. Reki was grinning at Langa, one hand on his shoulder and the other gesturing wildly. Nearby, Shadow was strutting and flexing, occasionally leaning towards the two teenagers to shout something. They appeared completely oblivious to him and to everything but each other.

“Goodness, who hasn’t been annoying?” Cherry sighed from behind his fan.

“A hit at a masquerade ball?” Kazuki sputtered in disbelief. By his side, Rei sat in silence, reading manga and apparently ignoring him completely. “Kyu-chan, how’re we supposed to pass for the kind of pedigreed rich people who go to balls?”

“Speak for yourself,” came a low monotone from behind the comic book.

“What?!” Kazuki swiveled over to look at his partner.

Rei peered over the top of the book with bored eyes. “Technically, I am a pedigreed rich person.”

Kazuki chuckled. “Okay, sure, but I don’t know if a mafia pedigree counts. I mean, it’s not like you took breaks from learning marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat to study the rules of etiquette and how to play piano and dance a waltz,” he scoffed. Then he saw Rei’s face. “Wait, did you?”

    “Of course.”

“Oh.” Kazuki paused to process this new information. “Huh. Okay, Kyu-chan, we’ll take the job.”

Kaoru was waiting for his client at the bar in Sia La Luce when Carla informed him that the meeting was actually next week and she had, regrettably, misread his calendar.

“Misread?” Kaoru’s brow furrowed as he looked down at the glowing bracelet around his wrist. “Carla, you don't have to read my calendar, it’s stored in your software.”

Just then, Kojiro sidled up. “You’re glaring at that bracelet.” he smirked. “Did your robot girlfriend break up with you? And since when do you come to Sia without a client during business hours?”

“Carla is fine,” Kaoru retorted. Actually, he wasn’t at all sure Carla was fine, but Kojiro didn’t need to know that his constant badmouthing might be justified. “And I just… had a craving for carbonara, and everywhere else is way worse at making it.”

“Kaoru, is that an irritable troll-speak way of saying you enjoy my cooking?” Kojiro’s tone was teasing, but his smile was brilliant. Kaoru scowled as he tried and failed to stifle the thought that he looked very handsome.

“Wanna settle this with a beef,” Joe snapped, “or are you scared?”

"Start the countdown!" Cherry shouted, before demanding, “What terms?”

Above them, the countdown lights began to flash.

“After you, your majesty—you name your terms!” barked Joe.

“Age before beauty, meathead!” Cherry retorted.

Then, just as the countdown was about to expire, both men suddenly roared in unison, “LOSER HAS TO MARRY THE WINNER!”

By the starting line, Langa and Reki both stood in complete silence for a moment. Eventually Langa turned to Reki.

    “Um. What?” Langa asked.
