The true origin of the soulmate system is, for lack of a more delicate phrasing, a crapshoot. In the modern day, the majority of people only share a link with their soulmate as far as what is written on the skin.

“Forgot my stupid fucking-” Taehyun cuts himself off with a gasp, staring down at his wrist. “Oh my god.”
“What, what's wrong?” Kai asks, but Taehyun doesn't bother trying to put together a verbal response because his best friend is already moving to see what he's looking at. Kai lets out an honest to god screech, and if Taehyun weren't slowly but surely losing his sanity, he would have complained.
Kai realizes this, too, reaching out to gently touch his fingers to the spot just below the writing and call Taehyun's attention back to planet earth.
“You okay?” He asks. Taehyun looks up at him, blinking his face back into focus, and shakes his head. Before he can be asked for elaboration, he reaches for his phone and types in the phone number with shaky fingers.
