"And if I give up on consequences
is that despair
or passion? I can’t protect
myself from either. The lantern swinging
bearing down, pressing the dark
to a sliver
of shade at the edges of my field
of vision..."

“Your absence has gone through me like a thread; everything I do it colored with it.” - W.S. Merwin
Neil was gone, and with it the Dead Poets Society. Nothing could change that. No songs sung in mourning, no tears in silence, no screams muffled by hands, no prayers whispered in darkness. No words, written or spoken. Mr. Keating had been wrong, he realized. Words and ideas couldn’t change the world. If they could, then Neil wouldn’t be dead. And Charles Dalton wouldn’t have shut himself off from his friends alone to grieve and await Mr. Nolan’s decision on expulsion.
Footsteps towards his door. The slight whine of the hinges as it opened.
He didn’t look up.
“Hey, Charlie.”
[In which Charlie grieves, and Knox provides some solace. Because I want to do all that I can to keep this fandom alive, and angst is sometimes worth it.]

Summary
“I know what it’s like,” Steph said, “not wanting to go home.”
“He does not,” Damian said falteringly, “hurt me. I am safe. I just…” A long pause. “Do not want to.”
He had never sounded more like a child, and Steph thought he knew it too, the way he re-focused on the streets, like if he glared hard enough he could manifest criminal activity.
Steph stared at him for a minute longer. “I’m heading back to my dorm,” she said.
Damian, still sitting on the ground curled up, looked so small. Finally, he said, “I shall… permit you to offer me shelter.”
Steph’s eyebrows flew up. “You shall permit me. Jesus.”
