Lee needed Angel. They had accepted his loyal shrine, but rejected his sin of murder. Just as they were about to leave him forever, Lee reused the anesthetic he had used on Brandon. Angel needed to be protected, and he was going to make them stay. Angel will understand. They always did.

“Is there anything I can do?” Lee asks, watching the way their fidgeting is amplified by their anxious thoughts.
Angel takes a moment to think. “I don’t think so,” they admit after their deliberation, which hurts about as much as if Angel had pressed that old power drill into the meat of Lee’s stomach then flicked the switch to ‘on.’ “I mean, I’m just nervous. It’s stupid.”
“It’s not stupid. It’s very natural to fear an experience you haven’t had before, especially one in which you —”
“Yeah. I get it.”
Lee closes his mouth.
Post ‘Accept’ ending, Lee takes Angel to a routine doctor’s appointment. He handles it extremely well.

Summary

It could delude even the most rational man into believing there was a fate greater than the grave waiting for them at the end of the line. It beckons and beguiles.
Angel was born cursed. That is, perhaps, why they find themselves here.
