Summary
The war is coming, and Annabeth knows Percy is going to die.
Maybe not for certain. Maybe prophecies are never that simple. But she has spent enough years watching people she loves disappear to know better than to trust in maybes. Percy, meanwhile, is doing what he does best: refusing to think too far ahead. There are missions to train for, monsters to fight, a war to prepare for, and Rachel Dare is a convenient reminder that there might still be a life outside of all this.
So they don't talk about it. Not the prophecy, not the war, and certainly not the strange, breathless thing that keeps happening between them whenever they're alone.
They call it luck, or comfort, or tradition, anything that lets them avoid the truth.
For one year, Percy and Annabeth keep finding their way back to each other in the spaces between battles, stealing pieces of a future neither of them is sure they'll ever have, and pretending they don't know what those kisses mean.
Neither of them is particularly good at pretending.
