Summary
Kingdom Of Marionettes was once a glorious amusement park, home to a master craftsman's final seven marionettes—Jester, Knight, Butler, Chef, Maid, Wizard, King—said to carry souls and a curse that their names must never change. After its golden age, the park was abandoned and forgotten.
The protagonist, an unemployed young man who feels a kinship with abandoned things, has a strange dream of a corridor and those seven names. Soon after, he receives a job offer to become the night security guard at Kingdom Of Marionettes.
On his first night, he explores the grounds: an outdoor stage, a workshop filled with unfinished puppets, a storage room holding hundreds of old marionettes, and finally the preservation room where the seven puppets rest. He is drawn to Jester—a two-meter-tall puppet with a half-smiling, half-weeping face.
During his patrol, he hears strange knocking sounds and a growing sense of being watched. Returning to the preservation room, he finds Jester has changed its posture, its arm now extended toward him. He flees to his room and locks the door. Looking out the window, he sees Jester's silhouette standing in the garden below—as if it has followed him out.
