“Hwha-what…?” Blearily, Edward cracked open his eyes, the delicate movement causing microscopic specks of sand to tumble from his lashes. He could feel the grit crunch in his teeth and stab under his fingernails. His hair, which was tied back in its usual braid, was pulled loose slightly and he was certain that every strand held a piece of dirt. Despite the intense heat, Edward could sense he was in someone’s shadow, and that alone livened him up.
"Kid?" Vash shook Ed again, and like a rug that hadn't seen a good cleaning sand flew off of the boy. "Oh! You're waking up hey, hey!"
