Her OBGYN tells her that this is because of menopause; her husband tells her that it’s because both girls are out of the house and she worries about them; her mother tells her over a crackling phone line that it must be because of some unrepented sin. Barbara knows it’s because she’s fallen in love with Melissa.

When they’re all seated at the dining room table, Gina clears her throat.
“Um, so I wanted to say something,” she says shakily, “while I have you all here.”
Melissa knows what she is going to say, because Gina came to her first. “Do you really think they’ll be okay with it? Will you be there when I do it?”
Barbara suspects, and has suspected for a long time; the giant poster of that X-Files woman hanging over her bed is not exactly subtle. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Barbara, too, harbors a secret affinity for redheads (well, redhead), but she’s better at hiding it. She’s had fifteen years of practice.

Barbara opens the book. It is thin enough that she can comfortably hold it open with just one hand. The other hand dashes into the fire, fingers twisting in strands of flame. As a young girl, she braided her friends’ hair; as a mother, she braided her daughters’ hair; now, in the vibrant sunset of her life, she is overcome with the urge to braid Melissa’s hair. Maybe she will, later. For now, she will read to Melissa and let Melissa stoke the flames within her.

Barb arrives at 2p,m., just as the heat hits its apex. She’s carrying a huge bag laden with sunscreen and cold cubed watermelon, and the largest sunhat Melissa has ever seen tucked under her arm. Melissa watches her walk up the path to the front door and rushes to open it before Barb has to rearrange the things in her arms. Melissa welcomes her into the house with a hug, inhaling talcum powder and the coconut lotion that she has come to associate with hot summer days.
