Caitlyn watches the Noxian ships leave the harbor, stands there at the edge, the wind whipping her hair about, the chill sharp in the early morning sun.
She watches words she wishes she could have said fizzle into the salty air, watches the tiniest specks of red disappear into the horizon, flecks of blood trapped beneath her nails that she’ll never wash out.
There’s a tug to her hand.
She turns, and there Vi is.
There Vi is, warm and open and loving like she doesn’t care, like it’s alright, like there’s nothing wrong.

Summary
The image flashes back from Vi’s memory — Caitlyn lying unconscious on the hospital bed, her head half wrapped with thick bandages, hair still crusted with blood. The tubes in her arms, the smell of disinfectant, the muffled intelligible voices in the background, Vi aching and exhausted sitting by her shoulder to watch her breathe for hours.
Healing is a slow process, inside and out.

“You have me,” Vi says, as a matter of fact. As if she has anyone else to live for, to give her loyalty to. “In any way you’d want me.”

Summary
Caitlyn observes from the wall as Vi runs the routine, then comes over. She touches Vi’s lower back. Pushes, gently, guiding Vi through a rotation of her hips. Vi’s lower half lights up like a fork in a socket.
“It comes from here,” Caitlyn says. “Not so much the legs. Try it.”
Vi misses Caitlyn’s hand when she steps away. She follows the phantom push until she’s completed the sequence.
Tilting her head, Caitlyn says, “Better, but you’re stiff. Do you feel sexy?”
Vi’s been surrounded by gorgeous women every day, women with bouncier hair, longer legs, more graceful relevés. And instead of admiring them, she’s competing with them. So, no. Vi does not feel sexy.

Summary
She is the one who changes the bandages on Caitlyn for the time she is unconscious.
She is the one who props Caitlyn up, who gently unwraps the dirty bandages around her head, her eye– the one who carefully wipes the bruised, swollen skin. She can just barely see the stitches through her eyelids, is careful to not touch it directly. She is the one who gently grazes the bottom of the scar through her eye, the one who wraps a fresh bandage around the still-healing eye.
All the while, she softly sings under her breath, “Dear friend, across the river, my hands are cold and bare. Dear friend, across the river, I’ll take what you can spare.”
(There is no time to think when she is caring for someone else’s well being– there is no time to grieve when she has Caitlyn to focus on–)
