He swallows around the painful tightness in his throat, blinks away the stinging in his eyes. With the sight of Hermann suddenly more than he could bear, Newt turns away to the ocean. He watches its surface rise, then fall, the movement unhurried and rhythmic, as if it were the chest of a sleeping animal, colossal and ancient. Newt breathes through the hurt. His hands shake, and it carries through him, hollow as he is. He tightens his grip around his sandwich and his cup in a desperate attempt to conceal the tremors, clinging to whatever pride he has left. As if he isn’t being hopelessly transparent anyway.

Summary
They eat the tiramisu outside on the patio and Miles brings the radio with them, where voices chat lightly in Italian, sometimes laughing or playing music. Occasionally, Phoenix asks for a translation, and Miles slips in and out of the two languages seamlessly - he doesn’t even care much for what they’re saying, Phoenix just likes to hear him repeat the words back to him. “Pirla,” Miles says, spooning at a layer of cocoa-powder, “it means ‘idiot’ or 'stupid person'.”
“Pirla.” He repeats, in full-blown American. “And what are they saying now?”
“They’re talking about how much they hate their husbands.”
“Jesus. Why does everyone always hate their husbands?”
Phoenix makes dinner. A week spent in Lake Como, 2022.

Shiv feels tears spring to her eyes, feels something heavy in her esophagus. She clears her throat, blinks back the hot tears brimming in her eyes.
“Mhm,” she says, “Yeah. Federal punishment.”
Kendall nods, solemn. “Death by firing squad.”

Newt's no longer being controlled by the Precursors, but that doesn't mean he has a place to go, or an idea of what to do. Hermann, luckily, has a spare room, a listening ear, and twenty years of pining under his belt.
Recovery, they both find, is rarely linear- and the world never quite stops feeling like it's ending.

Congratulations to the author for writing the only Uprising compliant fic I will read! I despise that movie so deeply, but this fic is like a bandaid to what it did to me. I love divorced-but-never-married what-could-have-been messes Newt and Hermann. And the way they're both portrayed as autistic! Thank god someone else shares my vision

Tom listens to Greg descend the stairs and winds a hand tight into the duvet, swallowing back a heady impulse to call after him. He wishes that he’d been released on a Friday, then he could mope in bed behind a door while still getting to listen to Greg make platitudes all day.
Absence makes the heart fonder and all that awful shit. It’s just a lot, really, to be – He doesn’t believe this was a good idea, anymore, taking up a completely different life for his house arrest, no matter what it had seemed like under stress and dread of leading himself to fucking slaughter.

A fic made to steal my western NY heart. It's all "western NY sucks I hate it here I need to move out" until someone romanticizes how shitty the Sabres are. But oh my god the idea of Tom /actually/ going to prison for Greg. It's just enough escapism from the plot of the show without it feeling too sappy and ooc.
