God’s truth: It does not occur to Henry until the moment he spies Hans’s heel hanging over the edge of the hangman’s block at Trosky that Birdie of Pirkstein could ever die.

My take on For Whom the Bell Tolls. KCD2 spoilers for said quest. One shot, canon outcome with an established relationship flair.

    Summary

When Henry found out one of the biggest tournaments in Bohemia would be held in Kuttenberg in a couple days he decided to sign up. As a faceless black knight.

After all, Hans was busy charming local lords and he had nothing better to do.

What he didn't expect was that the black knight would catch his lord's attention. Nor that he wouldn't be able to stop himself from responding.

    Summary

No one else will do it for you. The words come unbidden to his mind, their source nebulous. Maybe it's his Pa's warm rumble, his tough-guy love that always ended up too tender. Maybe it's Captain Bernard's scolding, the rough hand pushing him to get up, try again, don't give up. Maybe it's even Sir Radzig's calm tenor, his cool, highborn cynicism. It doesn't matter. All that remains is the principle behind it, the hard-earned kernel of life's unfeeling truth: it's easy to die. If Henry wants to live—and he does, he does, horribly, selfishly does—then he needs to act.

Sometimes growing up means learning how to do your own stitches.

Since Skalitz Henry could only see the smoke. The scorching heat of his own rage seared his lungs with every breath. The fire he grew up taming had turned against him. That is, until Hans Capon burst into his life in floods of red and gold, who knew nothing of the blacksmith’s work but sparks flew when he laughed.
