Too scared to want anything that would be inconvenient for anyone else.” She smiles a little wider. “And that’s what everyone liked about me, in the end.”
Marcille inhales sharply. “Falin—”
“But now, I don’t care. As much, anyway. I like this. I like wanting things and being honest about it. I like being strong and scary sometimes.” She digs her nails into the back of her own neck, relishing the sting. “I think I like it more than I like being liked.”

Summary
After deciding to travel the world and get to know herself a little better, Falin manages the woes of a long-distance relationship with Marcille, who is hard at work in Melini, trying to solve a completely different problem. While attempting to find a way to alleviate some of the distress Falin feels at no longer having some of the more enjoyable aspects of being a Chimera, the two of them try to meet in the middle without losing one another along the way.

Another wisp of memory, of her father, in the days when he was broad and still seemed young. She thought of him at the strangest times, patting Marcille’s head after an early magic mishap and saying, with affection, be careful what you wish for.
Falin's eyes shot open, wide and golden. Her great body was still, as she took in the scene. But it was functioning, she was alive, like a miracle.

Summary
It feels like a dream, watching Kit leaning further into the touch, a scene straight out of a fantasy.
It reminds her of the folded drawing tucked into her pillowcase, of leaning over it in the barely there light of a candle, trying to smooth the folds out. It brings back the lines she’s blurred by grabbing it with hurried hands. Of the ones she blurs by coming with her face buried in Ruby’s hair, trying to pretend it’s her princess instead.
“So?” Kit whispers. “What do you say?”
Jade wants to pull her shirt up and push her legs apart. She wants to press closer until they’re breathing the same air, to wrap Kit up in her arms where no one will hurt her. But she remembers that day, when Kit kept scratching at her cheek. She remembers her ruse and the bruises she’d left on her legs and how a hug had broken her down better than the edge of a sword.
It pulls Jade out of it, and she pulls Kit’s shirt back down too, doesn’t even look at her face as she reports her ribs are fine. Kit’s confusing pain with pleasure the same way she’s confusing loneliness with lust.

Or: Jade keeps going back to Ruby, Kit isn't taking it well (neither is Jade).
