Jin Ling took in a deep breath, moving his gaze to the skies. He could not hold that gaze for any longer without surrendering. “It does not matter.” His voice broke slightly.

Jin Ling scowled at him. “It does not matter! I am to be wed by the next winter, to a disciple chosen by the Jin elders. It will cement my leadership and bring the clan prosperity – ”
“Wed by the next winter?”
“Yes!” Jin Ling, so caught up in refusing to meet Sizhui’s eyes, missed the sudden rigidity that overcome the Lan at those words and the coldness with which the next words were said.
“So it has been decided?”
“Yes it has.” Jin Ling snapped.
